Oishii Japanese Thai Restaurant
As with many businesses in the Hunter Valley, Oishii Japanese Thai Restaurant is a family business. Bo Boonsong opened the restaurant on her own in 2004 and was joined by her son Patrick each weekend for added support. But what started as a tourism restaurant limited to weekend trade has developed into a seven day a week gig for the pair.
The added weekly trade, which saw Patrick take over as the restaurant manager in 2012, has also cemented their status as the local’s favourite place to eat as well.
Oishii is somewhat unique, as it is the only Asian restaurant in Pokolbin and the only Asian restaurant in a vineyard in Australia. Located within the Roche Estate complex on Broke Road in Pokolbin and overlooking the architecturally designed amphitheatre and vines, Oishii provides a conveniently located, relaxed and affordable dining alternative with dishes designed to please every palate.
The menu at Oishii is a combination of two Asian cultures - Thai and Japanese. It includes all the traditional Thai favourites such as Thai fish cakes, stir-fried vegetables with soft tofu, chicken cashew nuts, green curry chicken and other fragrant Thai curries, as well as a range of Japanese dishes that include assorted sushi and sashimi selections.
“It’s a really big and varied menu – combining a variety of Asian cuisines into one menu can be tough,“ laughed Patrick when we asked him what was the most popular dish on the menu.
“I would have to say the favourites are our Sushi and Sashimi, Prawn tempura and Gyoza dumplings. But our Beef Massaman, Teppanyaki and Chicken Green Curry are all really popular too.“
